Technological advancement is always painful.

In addition to being a brilliant novelist, I am a rare book conservator. And as a rare book conservator, I deal with artifacts of technological change which undoubtably presented problems for early adopters:

Where's the kid?

Brilliant little video. Only thing missing is an eight year old saying, "Come on, Old Man, you can do this!".

Hahahahahaha!

>sniff< Gods, that's funny.

I've met the descendants of both those guys

I'm a contractor working on Robins Air Force Base. I'm an application developer, not tech support. We have a proper help desk for dealing with computer problems. That doesn't really matter though because when a user has any sort of issue when using something I've written, it's my name on the application. So I wind up fielding a large number of general computer questions. The simple ones I try to take care of myself because I'm a nice guy. The more complicated ones I hand over to actual tech support.

With those qualifications and based on my experience, I have to say that I've met the descendants of both those guys.

Book Nerd!

Jim, you are such a book geek! Heheh... That was very funny. I'm a print junkie myself, which is slightly different, I think. ;)

Jim Downey's picture

Yeah, there's a difference.

I don't often get to work on pre-print books, just one or two a year. I do love manuscripts - you can really get a sense of connection in holding someone else's writing that's 7 or 800 years old. But hand-printed books (using a common press such as was common from Gutenberg to say Ben Franklin, and are still used by book artists today) hold their own charm, with the distinct impressions of hand-set bits of lead type...

Sorry, geekin'. Yeah, I'm a book nerd. Wouldn't do what I do if I wasn't, I suppose...
