Troop withdrawal by 2013 not certain, top Democratic presidential candidates say
From the Kansas City Star:
HANOVER, N.H. | The leading Democratic presidential hopefuls conceded Wednesday that they cannot guarantee to withdraw all U.S. combat troops from Iraq by 2013, the end of the next president’s first term.
“I think it’s hard to project four years from now,” said Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois in the opening moments of a campaign debate in the nation’s first primary state.
“It is very difficult to know what we’re going to be inheriting,” said Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York.
“I cannot make that commitment,” said former Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina.
Swear to god I'd vote for Ron Paul over any of these gutless assholes. (more below)
For about three years now I’ve been saying that EVERYTHING that's happened during the Bush reign is more than half the fault of the Democrats. Sure the Republicans held the power, but we EXPECTED them to loot and kill and lie and ravage. It’s what they do. But the Democratic opposition, them we expected to RESIST. They were duty-bound to do SOMETHING.
They haven’t. They’ve rolled over like puppies, bared their hairless pink bellies and nervously pissed themselves – when they did anything at all – for years. They whined, but then they went along.
In fact, not one thing stands out in my mind that the Democrats actually DID in opposition, for the past ... oh, ten years or so. I mean, nothing at all.
This is just one more data point for my conclusion that there is a single political party in America — half of them wear red ties, half of them blue, but NONE of them represent me, or anybody I know.
If politics was a porn video, Republicans would be the leather-clad, whip-wielding Tops. Democrats would be the squealing, submissive Bottoms. But they’d be in the same bed.
Oh, shit. Gonna be a long election year.

Though I also voted for
Though I also voted for Kerry/Edwards, and though I've grown disillusioned with Ron Paul over his abortion stance and born-again Xtian crap, I may yet cross party lines and at least give him my vote in the Texas Republican Primary, just to keep things interesting.
Many conscientious Republicans are wanting to vote Libertarian, while many conscientious Democrats are starting to want to vote Green again. I'd love to see a four-way tussle of (from Left to Right) Green-Democrat-Libertarian-Republican...
As much as mainstream Democrats hector those like me who dissent and lean Green on the left side of the fence, same rule applies on the other side of the aisle along the Libertarian/Republican split, where those leaning Libertarian are excoriated for being "Loosertarians", etc, who'll be mere spoilers who end up electing Democrats, etc. Sounds familiar, right? (how do I know?--meh, I hang out in some Gun-rights forums, as I'm also pro-RKBA, but the overall climate tends to lean Right in those fora); what if, just if, they actually got some Greens and Libertarians into office, people holding positions closer to what We the People actually want? (however schizoid that may be in the aggregate)
The New Deal came about not because the Democratic Party was inherently good; the New Deal came about because the Democratic Party had to compete with challengers from the Left like Sen. Huey Long (D-LA) and a viable Socialist party and the memory of the Progressive/(agrarian)Populist movements of the late 19th century still fresh in people's minds. The Democrats will never change until they have credible competition to their Left flank--or more importantly, just competing against GENUINE POPULISTS of ANY stripe--and keep losing elections because of being denied votes from said opposition.
Things are already speeding to a fascist hell anyway. with Democrats greasing the skids, collaborating all the way. Blasted Vichy Dems.
ron paul
Ron paul scares me.
He's make a great nazi.
Plus he's christian which only compounds the nazi in him.
just remember...
...ron paul's all libertarian and hands off... until you get to abortion.
i'm with ya, tho', on the rest of it :-\
Ron paul and the american death camps.
The fact that's he's libertarian is cool. But it's for the wrong reasons.
He's libertarian regarding taxes and money not human rights.
Thats why he's against all the stuff that impinges on our freedom and costs money but anti abortian.
He cares about money not people.
That's fucked up.
holding my nose
I am pretty upset with the feckless D's as well, but I don't see myself voting for a nutjob like Ron Paul. He might be against the Iraq occupation, but his other views are borderline anarchist and of course he is just as big of a christianist as any of em. Hillary looks like the inevitable D nomination and she makes my skin crawl, but I can't see myself voting for any of the R's. I will most likely hold my nose and vote for her. And really, how is this different from '04? Kerry was about the worst possible candidate the Dems could have chosen, but I voted for him.
Here is why I cannot vote for a GOP candidate:

hhahaha
hahahahaha
The flip side...
..to your lament is this dKos piece about how the religious right may well go with a 3rd party candidate.
Personally, I think that having more options on each side is the way to go. Like you, Hank, I'm just completely fed up with having two versions of crap to have to choose from. Breaking up the duopoly would work wonders for making these clowns accountable.

I'm Australian, and we're
I'm Australian, and we're gonna have an election this year. Over here, it seems the electorate has (finally) woken up to the incumbent's bullshit.
What's taking you Americans so long?
Good luck there.
