This story is from March and I don't recall any mention from New Scientist or Scientific American about this. I do remember reading about this incident (or else a very similar one) at about the time this article was written in which there was no mention of black holes, but it was said the cause was unknown.
Which is really a longwinded way of saying "If this is true I am surprised I did not hear of it earlier".
Bear in mind...

The sentence, "Scientists used a particle accelerator at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, New York, to shoot two beams of gold nuclei at each other at the speed of light [emphasis added]" doesn't exactly strike me with awe at the top-notch science reporting.
