Loyalty Day

Brent Rasmussen's picture

"Loyaty Day". We are so screwed. How long before the pejorative slur "disloyal" starts flying around?

[link] NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2006, as Loyalty Day. I call upon all the people of the United States to join in support of this national observance, and to display the flag of the United States on Loyalty Day.

Welcome to the next Imperial Monarchy. All hail King George.

Loyalty Day...

Was first proclaimed by Eisenhower as part of the anti-commie house joint resolution 479, on July 18, 1958. Prior to that in the 20's it was "Americanization Day" whatever THAT means, also an anti-commie thingy. See 36 U.S.C. § 115:, and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loyalty_Day . Basically every president is supposed to sign a proclamation every year, so it's not unique to El Busto.

Pep rally

It's not so bad--after all, we have the whole rest of the year to be disloyal!
Reminds me of high school, when the students would be herded into the gym bleachers for a "pep rally" to cheer the football team so that they might beat the Big Rival for the fourth time in 60 years. Rah, rah; go, go; ho, hum.

Actually, May 1st had been

Actually, May 1st had been designated officially as Law Day some time ago. You can probably guess what Bush was rather it was not.

It's labor Day everywhere but here

So I say it's Labor Day. Workers of the World Unite, etc. is a lot less scary than a government declaring "Loyalty Day." A lot less. No doubt Il Duce* would declare it a holiday if it weren't for the fact that it might mean workers would get the day off.

*While it's tempting to compare Bush to Hitler, a quick glance at history shows that to be inaccurate. Nazis were general competent at whatever ghastly tasks they set themselves. The parallells to Benito Mussolini, however, are obvious. Not only was he an elected demagogue who delighted in military glory after a very brief and undistinguished excursion in uniform, not only did his party proclaim the "He made the trains run on time." when every Italian knew they didn't, and got later than ever before, but he based his power on using government to give a free ride to big business in return for supporting his personal ego trip. What's more, it doesn't violate the Hitler Rule.

Franco

Actually, Bush is more like Franco, in that his pattern of rule involves the conservative elites ruling directly, as in Spain, rather than outsourcing government to the fascists in hope that they'll crack down on communism, as in Italy.

What a coincidence?

I suppose Bush doesn't even know what May Day is?

Now if only he would abide by his own proclamations and start being loyal to this country by obeying its laws.

Isn't it supposed to be President's Day?

I remember that back when unions demanded to have May 1st recognized as Labor Day, the federal government decided to throw Labor Day to September and declare May 1st Loyalty Day or President's Day or something like that. Basically, it was a ploy meant to divide the labor movement.
