I love Joss Whedon
Hat-tip to Vanessa at Feministing: Joss Whedon spoke at an event organized by Equality Now about creating strong female characters, such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Serenity first mate Zoe.
Complaining about how he has been asked hundreds of times about how come he writes strong females, he showcases a few of the answers he gives. The best is by far, "It's ridiculous... why don't you ask a hundred other writers, 'Why don't you write strong female characters?'"
Now go watch the whole thing.

One strong female character in the comics
... is Lt. Pamela Mae Snap, of 'Brewster Rockit, Space Guy'
Video link to Joss Whedon; Serenity screenings weekend
Hi, video link to the Equality Now talk you mentioned is www.youtube.com/watch?v=cYaczoJMRhs
Also, if you're curious why the Serenity film screening is THIS weekend and not some other time, the answer is . . . 42
No, I haven’t got Douglas Adams “Hitchhiker’s Guide” series confused with “Firefly” – it’s Joss Whedon’s 42nd birthday!

Female Characters
It's really a move in the right direction. Actually, diversity in pop media is moving fast. Marvel comics just came out with redone characters featuring ethnic minorities and gay/lesbian characters. More diversity mean wider audiance and possibilities for plot lines in botf print and broadcast/film media. A good thing for all.
